Genesis SRC reentry

A series of still images by Paul Wercinski, NASA Ames Research Center, showing the daytime reentry of the Genesis Sample Return Capsule over Nevada and Utah on September 8, 2004. The capsule entry was observed from the USAF research aircraft "FISTA" during the NASA "Hyperseed MAC" observing campaign. During this time span, the capsule descended from 46.3 to 42.6 km altitude, having past the point of peak heating at 60 km altitude. The images are slightly out of focus and broadened by seeing, thus preventing saturation and showing the true color of the cooling surface of the capsule's heat shield.
